FDA Takes on Drug Shortage Fears at PDUFA Reauthorization Meeting

January 25, 2011
The FDA is urging drugmakers to notify the agency when a product is discontinued so that potential drug shortages can be avoided. Such shortages have gained increasing attention in recent months and the issue was brought up by industry stakeholders at a Dec. 17 Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) reauthorization meeting, according to notes posted on the agency’s website recently. While the FDA told stakeholders it can take some steps to mitigate issues caused by a shortage, it said it does not have the authority to force a manufacturer to make a certain product.
