HHS, DOJ Healthcare Fraud Investigations Continue to Rise

January 31, 2011
The Department of Justice (DOJ) and HHS are revealing more details about the extent of their efforts to combat healthcare fraud, telling Congress they now have more than 3,000 open criminal investigations. In a Jan. 24 letter responding to a request from Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), HHS and Justice note that nearly half of those cases relate to alleged violations of the False Claims Act. While many of those cases apply only to individuals, drugmakers are also under scrutiny as HHS and DOJ revealed that there are now more than 180 qui tam, or whistle-blower, cases under investigation that allege fraud in connection with the pricing and marketing of pharmaceuticals.
