President’s Call for Innovation Wins Devicemakers’ Support

The device industry welcomed President Barack Obama’s calls to further innovation in his State of the Union address last week. “When the president is talking about how American companies innovate and continue to do so, we think he is talking about the medical technology industry,” Gary Karr, executive vice president for public affairs at AdvaMed, said. As an example of steps that could be taken to spur innovation, the president cited his executive order for federal agencies, especially the FDA, to review their regulations. “When we find rules that put an unnecessary burden on businesses, we will fix them,” Obama said in his speech.
