Health Canada Is Consistently Missing Its Review Timelines

February 17, 2011
Health Canada’s Medical Devices Bureau (MDB) struggled to issue market authorizations in a timely manner in 2010, for the second year in a row. The backlog was a result of increasing application volumes, MEDEC, the Canadian medical device trade association, says in its Pulse newsletter. Last year, the MDB saw a 10 percent increase in application volumes, with new applications making up about 60 percent of that increase. Class II applications represent three-fourths of MDB’s new application volumes and increased nine percent from 2009.
