Funding Bill Would Cut Device Programs by 13% From FY 2010 Levels

February 21, 2011
H.R. 1, the continuing resolution (CR) that would fund the FDA for fiscal 2011, would allocate $318.8 million to the agency’s device programs, a 13 percent decrease from the $367 million appropriated in fiscal 2010. The CR, which spells out appropriations for the departments of Defense, Labor and several others in addition to Health and Human Services, contains nearly $62 million in user fees authorized by the Medical Device User Fee Act, up 8.7 percent from the $57 million devicemakers paid in fiscal 2010. Experts have predicted the funding cuts would lead to layoffs and limit hiring for FDA’s device programs.
