Devicemakers Concerned NHS Reforms Could Lower Prices, Spur Competition

February 23, 2011
Proposed reforms to England’s National Health Service (NHS) have devicemakers worried about competition and privatization — and what that could mean for prices. The concerns stem from the Health and Social Care Bill and the Operating Framework for the NHS in England 2011/12, which together could significantly change England’s health reimbursement system. The reforms would not affect healthcare in other parts of the UK. The bill, which was slated for the second reading in the House of Commons Jan. 31, would abolish the current strategic health authorities and primary care trusts and create in their stead local consortia of primary care providers to oversee funding and services.
