Study: Drugmakers Lag Behind in Using Information Technology

Drugmakers are increasing investments in social media and information technology, but they’re still lagging behind other healthcare industries in these areas, according to Ernst & Young’s annual report on the pharmaceutical industry. Industry investment in mobile technology, educational websites and social media rose 78 percent in 2010, according to “Progressions: Building Pharma 3.0,” released Tuesday. One area of particularly strong growth is in mobile health technology such as smartphone applications, which accounted for almost half of new initiatives in 2010.
