Klobuchar Asks FDA to Take Action Over Shortage of Shingles Vaccine

February 25, 2011
Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) is again pressing the FDA to take action over an ongoing drug shortage, this time of Merck’s shingles vaccine Zostavax. In a letter sent to FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg Feb. 10, Klobuchar urges the agency and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to work with Merck to find an immediate solution to the shortage of the vaccine. “Due to a recent recommendation by the [CDC] suggesting all individuals above the age of 60 should be vaccinated against shingles, demand for Zostavax (zoster vaccine), a vaccine used to prevent shingles, has increased dramatically while supply has fallen short,” Klobuchar says in the letter.
