New Medtech Taxes Pending in Two EU Countries

Devicemakers in Austria and France are facing new levies as governments look for novel ways to fund their regulatory functions in an austere economy. In Austria, the Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) plans to support vigilance activities by taxing all companies that sell, rent or lease medical devices to a “final consumer.” The definition of final consumer includes physicians and hospitals that do not resell devices.
