FDA’s China Inspection Plan Draws Praise, Criticism as 2013 Budget Hearings Open

An FDA plan to add 16 additional drug and food inspectors in China gained the support of House appropriators Wednesday, but one vocal Democrat called for less reliance on user fees if the agency would essentially subsidize foreign regulators. Rep. Rosa DeLauro wants more money for domestic inspections and regulations before the FDA supports a larger Chinese presence, the Connecticut Democrat said during a hearing on the agency’s budget in the House subcommittee on agriculture.
