Innovation, SMEs Hurt By Growing Use of Centralized Procurement

An uptick in centralized purchasing of medtech products in the EU threatens to depress prices, reduce innovation and lock out smaller suppliers, a Eucomed study finds. The study — conducted by Simon-Kucher & Partners and the University of Twente in the Netherlands — involved 61 interviews with procurement bodies, group purchasing organizations, hospitals and devicemakers. The researchers also looked at product-specific procurement and cost-effectiveness studies of selected products.
