U.S.-Led Global Treaty Needed to Nix Counterfeit Drugs, Scholar Says

May 11, 2012
A global treaty is needed to galvanize the necessary resources to combat elusive criminal networks counterfeiting drugs. And skeptical stakeholders must accept that the problem is more than just a matter of Western meddling, a conservative scholar says. Such a treaty would also help stem the flow of substandard products ever-prevalent in supply chains serving African and other less-developed countries, Roger Bate, an economist and scholar at the Conservative American Enterprise Institute, said. No global consensus exists on how to nab slippery, borderless crooks.
