New Study Challenges FDA Stance Against RFID to Protect Biologic Supply Chain

May 24, 2012
As biologic manufacturers look into new tracking technologies to safeguard their supply chains, they are limited by an FDA ban on radio frequency identification (RFID) because of supposed detrimental effects on the proteins in biologics. But a new study shows RF wavelengths did not cause any non-thermal effects on the proteins of biologics tested. “Our conclusion, at least from the products we tested, is that RFID is safe for the supply chain,” Ismail Uysal, assistant professor at the University of South Florida and lead author of the study, told a U.S. Pharmacopoeia workshop on Wednesday in Rockville, Md.
