UK May Create National Implant Registry

September 20, 2012
The UK is considering a national implant registry for breast implants and other devices used in cosmetic surgery in light of the PIP breast implant scandal. UK Health Secretary Andrew Lansley requested a review of the country’s plastic surgery industry and public input on the proposed registry on Aug.15. Likely information to be reported to the registry includes the date and place of an operation, clinical outcome and a method for identifying patients who got the devices. The review will also look at whether cosmetic surgery is adequately regulated, whether patients are properly informed before surgery and whether they get the right aftercare.
