Lilly to Pay $29 Million for FCPA Slipups, Company Agrees to Compliance Consultant

December 26, 2012
Eli Lilly has agreed to pay $29 million to settle SEC charges it violated the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA). The SEC alleges Lilly subsidiaries made improper payments to government officials in Russia, Brazil, China and Poland in exchange for business. Lilly’s Russia subsidiary used offshore “marketing agreements” to pay millions to third parties chosen by government customers or distributors, the SEC says. These entities rarely provided any services and sometimes were used to funnel money to government officials in exchange for business.
