Report Finds Bias in Sponsor-Funded Trials, Calls for Independent Reviews

Clinical investigators and medical journals need more access to trial protocols and data to protect patients from treatments based on research that may be tainted by bias in industry-sponsored studies, experts say. Scientists with the multinational Cochrane Collaboration sifted through 48 studies that analyzed thousands of drug and device trials from around the world and found industry-sponsored studies more often had favorable efficacy results, risk ratios, harm results and conclusions than studies not sponsored by industry.
