States Push Back on FDA’s Calls for More Compounding Authority

As the FDA pushes for stronger oversight of pharmacy compounding, state boards of pharmacy argue they are generally capable of overseeing the practice under existing statutory authority. If any federal regulatory fix is needed, clarity on terms such as “traditional” and “nontraditional” compounders and “manufacturers” would help states make better enforcement decisions, executive directors of state boards of pharmacy said Dec. 19 following a meeting with the FDA.
