European Parliament Approves EU Unitary Patent Rules

The European Parliament has approved a unitary patent system that will allow medtech innovators to cut their costs by purchasing one patent for market entry into the 25 participating EU member states. Italy and Spain are not participating in the patent system. The approved “unitary patent package” includes a regulation creating the unified European patent, a regulation requiring that patents be filed and available in English, German or French, and an international agreement setting up a Unified Patent Court.
