California Governor Vetoes Biosimilars Bill; No Override Planned

California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) Saturday vetoed legislation pushed by biotechs Amgen and Genentech intended to tighten dispensation of biosimilars. In rejecting the bill, which sailed through the state legislature with broad, bipartisan support, Brown said its timing was premature. SB 598 sought to permit substitution of a biosimilar only for biologics deemed by the FDA as “interchangeable” with the reference product. It also would have required pharmacists to report back to prescribers about which drug was dispensed.
