FDA Plans Joint Public Workshop on Biofilms

January 23, 2014

The FDA will hold a public workshop Feb. 20 to address insufficient understanding of the biochemical and physiochemical characteristics of biofilms, which are a source of often drug-resistant infections on implanted medical devices.

The workshop, which is being held in conjunction with Montana State University, will discuss research on biofilms and their public health impact, the challenges that scientists, government and industry face in addressing biofilms and medical devices and areas of research to address the scientific and clinical difficulties in developing technologies to prevent biofilms.

The agency is seeking feedback on the workshop topics through March 20. All comments will be posted on regulations.gov. The meeting will be held at the FDA’s White Oak campus in Rockville, Md.
