FDA Clears Covidien’s Kangaroo Feeding Tube With IRIS Technology

April 14, 2014

Covidien is launching its Kangaroo feeding tubes with IRIS technology immediately in the U.S., following the receipt of FDA 510(k) clearance.

The device consists of a disposable tube with a 3-mm camera that streams real-time video of a patient’s anatomy back to a monitor. The camera allows physicians to be sure they are inserting the tube into the patient’s airway rather than the esophagus, risking a collapsed lung. Until now, such procedures were performed blind, Covidien said.

The 10.4-inch monitor console is usable in English and six other languages and can capture and export saved images. An interface cable connects the tube to the monitor and the insufflation device delivers up to 30 mL of air per squeeze during placement of the tube, if needed.

The tubes — available in 8-, 10- and 12-Fr diameters and 36-, 43- and 55-inch lengths — are already marketed in Europe, Australia, Canada and Japan. — Lena Freund
