U.S. Military Picks Up Celox Gauze for Combat Use

April 17, 2014

The U.S. military’s Committee on Tactical Combat Casualty Care has approved the use of Medtrade’s Celox Gauze to control bleeding from combat injuries. Troops will now be cleared to carry the gauze in their packs, the devicemaker said this week.

According to Medtrade, the gauze has performed well in multiple tests, including a U.S. Navy study that showed a 90 percent survival rate in severe arterial hemorrhage. Celox gauze also stopped bleeding in 100 percent of 21 gunshot wound patients in Afghanistan and several civilian emergencies, the company says.

The UK devicemaker claims that Celox’s granulated coating allows it to work on “the most severe bleeding where current treatments are not effective.” It can be used in tandem with new tourniquets and drugs that help keep blood clots intact. Combat medics simply pack the gauze tightly over the wound and wrap it for evacuation, Medtrade says.

Celox gauze is FDA-cleared and used commonly by British and other troops, the company adds. — Lena Freund
