Olympus Launches Minimally Invasive, Next-Gen Capsule Endoscopy System

May 6, 2014

Olympus announced the U.S. rollout of its next-generation ENDOCAPSULE 10 system for small bowel capsule endoscopy procedures, following 510(k) clearance by the FDA.

The device employs an advanced Olympus lens and sensitive, high-resolution image sensor technology to capture clear and vivid images of a variety of abnormalities in the small bowel.

According to the Center Valley, Pa., devicemaker, the capsule’s 160° view range encompasses 10% more mucosa than capsule endoscopy products featuring a 145° field of view. A 12-hour battery life allows for maximal imaging and improves exam completion rates.

The system features built-in software that simplifies reading and analysis of the captured imagery, detects images requiring closer inspection and notes the site where the image was captured. A 3D tracking function displays the capsule position as it moves through the intestine.

“The new ENDOCAPSULE 10 System offers advanced, minimally invasive technology designed to improve diagnostic capabilities, procedural efficiency and patient comfort,” said Luke Calcraft, president of Olympus’ Medical Systems Group. He said the system should also improve quality of care and decrease costs of small bowel endoscopy procedures. — Kellen Owings
