Proa Medical Announces Mexican Joint Venture

June 18, 2014

Women’s health products manufacturer Proa Medical has created a joint venture to distribute its Brella line of gynecological and obstetrical devices.

The venture, Proa Medical Mexico, will enable the Redondo Beach, Calif., company to tap into a large and growing market of obstetricians and gynecologists in Latin America, where a large number of episiotomies are performed, the company said Tuesday.

Proa Medical’s portfolio includes the single-use Brella Vaginal Retractor, with a built-in light source designed to deliver ideal visualization and access during vaginal wall and perineum repair, and the single-use Brella-Spec Vaginal Speculum, which received 510(k) clearance in May. The speculum provides increased visualization and exposure during OB/GYN exams and procedures, the company says.

Afshin Nadershahi, chief technology officer at Proa Medical, said the retractor received a very favorable response from doctors and hospitals during last fall’s Mexican Congress of Gynecology and Obstetrics, demonstrating the large global market that could benefit from the company’s devices. — Kellen Owings
