Spectranetics Acquires Cardiovascular Balloon Maker AngioScore

July 1, 2014

Spectranetics, a maker of single-use devices used in minimally invasive cardiovascular procedures, has closed a $230 million purchase of cardiovascular balloon producer AngioScore.

The deal — first announced on May 27 — expands the life- and limb-saving solutions Spectranetics can offer physicians and patients and enhances the company’s sales and marketing capabilities, among other benefits, the Colorado Springs devicemaker said.

AngioScore’s balloon technology platform, the AngioSculpt, is designed to treat blockages in the coronary and peripheral vascular system. The balloons can be used to treat critical limb ischemia, in-stent restenosis, calcified lesions and chronic total occlusions, the company said.

The acquisition required an upfront cash payment along with additional, undisclosed commercial and regulatory milestone payments.

Spectranetics’ current portfolio includes laser catheters for ablation of artery blockages above and below the knee, support catheters to enable crossing of peripheral and coronary arterial blockages and guidewire retrieval devices. The company also has sheaths and accessories for the removal of pacemaker and defibrillator cardiac leads. — Kellen Owings
