Beckman Coulter Picks Up Siemens’ Clinical Microbiology Business

July 17, 2014

Beckman Coulter said Wednesday it is acquiring Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics’ clinical microbiology business for an undisclosed price.

The Siemens unit specializes in microbial identification and antibiotic sensitivity testing (ID/AST) and includes the MicroScan line of instruments, panels and consumables, along with data management solutions. According to Beckman Coulter, the MicroScan systems offer high accuracy and superior detection of emerging resistance, with more than 6,000 installed globally.

The Brea, Calif., diagnostics maker, a subsidiary of Danaher Corp., said Siemens’ ID/AST solutions add differentiated analytical systems to its portfolio, enhancing its clinical capabilities and boosting laboratory offerings while spurring continued growth.

The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2015. — Kellen Owings
