Brainlab Launches New Elements Automatic Brain Metastases Planning Software

July 21, 2014

Brainlab on Friday announced the European rollout of its Elements Automatic Brain Metastases Planning software for use in staging stereotactic radiosurgery for metastatic brain tumors, following receipt of the CE mark.

The software — part of the company’s portfolio of radiotherapy and radiosurgery Elements a La Carte technology — automatically selects metastases in such a way that the multileaf collimator or treatment beam shaper fits to the shapes of the selected targets without leaving gaps, the Munich, Germany, company said.

Within minutes of outlining all metastases, the algorithm generates an optimized radiosurgery plan and the clinician can review and approve the plan in various innovative and comprehensive views, the company added.

According to Niko Papanikolaou, chief medical physicist at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, the software reduces the amount of radiation delivered to healthy brain tissue so that patients receiving whole brain radiation can be treated without experiencing a decline in cognitive function. — Kellen Owings
