Medtronic Rolls Out Sinus Surgery System in U.S.

Medtronic Tuesday announced the immediate, nationwide launch of its NuVent EM Sinus Dilation System. The system is designed to restore normal mucociliary clearance to the sinuses during balloon sinus surgery. It works in conjunction with the company’s image-guided Fusion ENT Navigation System.

According to the company, NuVent is the first and only balloon sinus dilation system to feature built-in electromagnetic surgical navigation technology. During surgery, the instrument’s tip displays on the Fusion system’s screen, guiding the surgeon in balloon placement.

The NuVent system received 510(k) clearance in November 2013.

The company plans to conduct clinical trials to evaluate additional indications for the device, such as revision surgery. — Kellen Owings
