Medtronic Launches Continuous Heart Rate Monitor in U.S.

September 15, 2014

Medtronic said Monday that it has launched its new external heart monitor, the SEEQ Mobile Cardiac Telemetry System, in the U.S. The system received 510(k) clearance from the FDA in February.

The wire-free SEEQ monitor can be worn for up to 30 days to detect and diagnose the cause of irregular heartbeats in symptomatic patients. And it is water-resistant, allowing patients to be continuously monitored while exercising and showering, Medtronic notes.

Data collected by the monitor is sent to cardiographic technicians at the Medtronic Monitoring Center, and reports are provided the patient’s physician for review and analysis.

"Wearing a bulky monitor for more than a couple of days can be a frustrating experience for patients,” says Ethan Levine, director of electrophysiology and arrhythmia services at Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira, N.Y. “Because this device is an inconspicuous and easy-to-use adhesive patch, patients are more likely to wear it continuously, allowing for more consistent and comprehensive capturing of data, which enables physicians to make accurate diagnoses and timely treatment plans.”

The system was developed by Corventis. Medtronic finalized its acquisition of the St. Paul, Minn., company in June. — Kellen Owings
