Nexstim Launches MRI-Guided Brain Mapping System

September 19, 2014

Finnish devicemaker Nexstim Thursday rolled out its new Navigated Brain Stimulation system in the U.S. The NBS 5 system is indicated for noninvasive presurgical mapping of the brain in clinical neurosurgery.

The system combines MRI-guided transcranial magnetic stimulation with electromyography measurement and integrates digital imaging and communications with surgical planning systems, surgical navigators and microscopes, the company said. Maps of the brain’s motor areas are generated through computer-aided alignment and electrical field-based stimulation.

According to Nexstim, the NBS 5 shortens the mapping time for both the patient and user, while the head tracker provides a more comfortable experience and more freedom when positioning the device. A new camera-aiming tool ensures optimal camera positioning, the company adds.

Clinical trials of the NBS 5 are ongoing.

The company plans to showcase the device at the two October events: the 6th International Symposium on Navigated Brain Stimulation in Neurosurgery in Berlin, Germany, and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons 64th Annual Meeting in Boston, Mass. — Kellen Owings
