Medina Medical Receives CE Mark for Brain Aneurysm Treatment Device

September 29, 2014

Vascular abnormality treatment devicemaker Medina Medical said it has received a CE mark for its first product, the Embolization Framing Coil, a minimally-invasive device used to treat brain aneurysms.

The Medina Embolization Framing Coil is delivered through a tiny catheter that has been threaded through blood vessels into the aneurysm, the Menlo Park, Calif., startup said last week. The coil is designed to occupy space effectively within the aneurysm — it coils up, and blood clots form around the coil, preventing the aneurysm from breaking open and bleeding.

The coil took three years to develop, said Maria Aboytes, president and co-founder of Medina Medical.

The Embolization Framing Coil will be available in all countries that observe the CE mark. — Kellen Owings
