Advanced Brain Monitoring Launches Sleep Apnea Therapy Device

Advanced Brain Monitoring, a maker of sleep diagnosis and treatment devices, has launched its Night Shift treatment for positional obstructive sleep apnea and snoring in patients whose condition worsens when they sleep on their back, following the recent receipt of FDA 510(k) clearance.

The device is worn on the back of the neck and vibrates when the user sleeps on his or her back, increasing in intensity until they change their sleeping position. According to the Carlsbad, Calif., devicemaker, it also acts as interactive monitor, tracking the user’s response to therapy and measuring factors such as the interaction between alcohol and loud snoring and the effects of snoring on sleep quality.

In clinical trial, 90 percent of POSA subjects responded to Night Shift therapy and the median Apnea–Hypopnea Index declined 79 percent. Participants also slept more deeply, had less interrupted sleep and low blood oxygen levels, were more awake in the daytime and had fewer symptoms of depression. The percent of time snoring above 50 decibels was also significantly reduced, the devicemaker said. — Kellen Owings
