Exactech Acquires Collaborator BlueOrtho for Over $11 Million

January 20, 2015

Bone and joint restoration devicemaker Exactech has acquired BlueOrtho SAS, a French firm specializing in computer-assisted surgical technology, for $2.3 million. The deal includes up to an additional $9.25 million in milestone payments.

The companies have collaborated since 2009 to develop the ExactechGPS guided personalized surgery system, which was launched in 2014. The device offers orthopedic surgeons real-time visual guidance and alignment data in total joint replacement procedures. According to the Gainesville, Fla., devicemaker, it is also the only system available to offer a touch screen and camera system within the sterile field.

The GPS currently supports Exactech’s knee systems, but the company plans to expand its application to other parts of its portfolio.

Xavier Arabia, vice president of Exactech, said the acquisition was a logical next step in the companies’ partnership. “Exactech is strategically invested in this technology because we believe it will become the new standard of patient care in total joint arthroscopy,” he said. — Kellen Owings
