Boston Scientific Launches, Implants First Extended Longevity ICD

February 3, 2015

Boston Scientific has launched and implanted the first of its Extended Longevity implantable cardioverter defibrillators, which include the Dynagen EL and Inogen EL models. The first EL ICD was implanted at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, the devicemaker said Monday.

The new ICDs feature the company’s proprietary EnduraLife battery technology, which delivers up to double the battery capacity of other ICDs, the company said. Boston Scientific projects its EL ICDs will last nearly 12 years.

They are 11 percent smaller and 24 percent thinner than existing ICDs devices and are the only subcutaneous ICDs on the market, according to the company.

Cardiac surgeon Samir Saba, who performed the implant, said battery longevity has a direct impact on patient outcomes and cost of care. The EL ICDs can help to minimize the frequency of avoidable replacement procedures, reducing costs and the possibility of replacement-related complications. — Kellen Owings
