Penumbra Debuts New Vascular Embolization Device

February 27, 2015

Penumbra, a devicemaker specializing in products for unmet clinical needs, debuted its newest vascular embolization device, the POD. The peripheral occlusion device’s unique design lets it anchor to the vessel wall, allowing greater accuracy and packing density during embolization procedures, the company said.

Increased packing density helps ensure more effective embolization, said Adam Elsesser, CEO of Penumbra, adding that the device is a significant advancement for vascular embolization.

The POD is delivered through a high-flow microcatheter, permitting the physician to occlude distal vessels, the Alameda, Calif., company said. Once anchored, it transitions to a soft packing segment to create a stable, dense occlusion. Once the desired position is achieved, it detaches and gives way to physician control, Penumbra said.

The POD was introduced at the Society of Interventional Radiology meeting in Atlanta, which runs through March 5.  — Kellen Owings
