RFS Introduces New Surgical Sponge Detection System

March 11, 2015

RF Surgical Systems this week unveiled its RF Assure Detection System X, the first integrated system aimed at preventing surgical sponges from being left inside the patient’s body.

According to the Carlsbad, Calif., company, the system incorporates compliance support functions as well as improved scanning coverage that extends beyond general surgery to an application-specific approach by surgical specialty. The compliance-driven interface provides real-time feedback to aid operating room staff in effective sponge management, and automatically stores case and scan records for easy retrieval and review.

It also includes a new handheld scanning component, the ArQ?Sphere, which leverages dual 3D scan fields to address positioning challenges in head, neck and other specialty procedures, RFS said.

The RF Assure system is expected to cut down on incremental time under anesthesia and the use of X-rays to locate missing sponges, the company said. — Meg Bryant
