Varian Creates Algerian Subsidiary as Part of North African Expansion

March 17, 2015

Varian Medical Systems said Tuesday that it has launched a strategic operating unit in North African — Varian Medical Systems Algeria SPA.

The new entity — a joint venture with Algerian company Cialfarm S.A.R.L. — comes less than a year after Varian forged a $51 million deal with the Algerian Ministry of Health to construct six new cancer treatment centers equipped with high-tech radiotherapy and radiosurgery systems. The systems will feature Varian’s TrueBeam laser-guided imaging platforms.

Fouad Rahal, managing director of VMS Algeria, said the joint venture will allow greater access to care and enable better patient outcomes, as well as provide for the training of medical personnel on how to use Varian radiotherapy technology. It includes offices, a training and education center, a parts depot and a service center.

Cancer is a growing healthcare concern throughout the continent. The first Varian system was installed in Algeria more than 20 years ago, with the company now operating 16 systems in the country. — Jason Scott
