Boston Scientific Settles Another Transvaginal Mesh Lawsuit

Boston Scientific has settled another lawsuit involving its transvaginal mesh product after the plaintiff alleges she suffered injury while using it. The case was heard by the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

The confidential settlement was reached Monday, a week into the trial — the sixth against Boston Scientific over its Pinnacle device.

The Marlborough, Mass., devicemaker is facing more than 26,000 liability lawsuits claiming the urinary incontinence device is defective and causes complications. The company plans to pay an estimated $119 million to resolve nearly 3,000 cases.

The devicemaker lost two federal trials, in West Virginia and Miami, and was ordered to pay $18.5 million and $26.7 million, respectively. Women complained of suffering pain, bleeding, infection and injury while using the product.

The company has said that settlements do not constitute an admission of liability or wrongdoing.
Six other companies, including J&J’s Ethicon subsidiary and C.R. Bard Inc., are facing legal action over the products. — Jason Scott
