Dassault Systèmes to Introduce its First 3D Heart Simulator

May 21, 2015

French 3D design software maker Dassault Systèmes is set to launch the first simulated human heart from its “Living Heart Project” on May 29, the company said.

The project’s first heart model was developed using the company’s 3DEXPERIENCE platform. The simulator will be used to test medical devices, improve clinical diagnosis and guide presurgical planning. It allows for virtual tests and visualization of the heart’s response in ways that aren’t possible with traditional physical testing, Dassault said.

The project includes well-defined anatomic details of the heart and proximal vasculature such as the aortic arch, pulmonary artery and superior vena cava.

Launched in May 2014, the Living Heart Project is comprised of 45 members, including the FDA, Medical Device Innovation Consortium, hospitals and devicemakers. In November, Dassault and the FDA entered a five-year agreement to develop testing paradigms for the insertion, placement and performance of pacemaker leads and other cardiovascular devices.

MDIC President and CEO Bill Murray said the project already has been used to validate the efficacy of a novel valve assist device. — Kellen Owings
