MITA Commends House Committee’s Repeal of Medical Device Tax

June 4, 2015

The Medical Imaging & Technology Alliance Wednesday praised the House Ways and Means Committee for approving H.R. 160, “The Protect Medical Innovation Act of 2015,” to repeal the medical device tax, saying the effort “will help safeguard access to the lifesaving medical technologies and protect American jobs.”

The measure, introduced by Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) and sponsored by Reps. Erik Paulsen (R-Minn.) and Ron Kind (D-Wisc.), was approved by the committee by a 25-14 vote. The bill, with its large bipartisan group of co-sponsors, is expected to go before the full House of Representatives later this month.

MITA said that the tax threatens to cause the loss or deferral of more than 33,000 industry jobs. The industry employees more than 400,000 workers nationwide, generating more than $25 billion in payroll. — Kellen Owings
