BD, Medtronic Collaborate on Insulin Pump Infusion Set

June 8, 2015

BD Medical and Medtronic announced Monday that they will jointly introduce a new insulin pump infusion set featuring BD FlowSmart technology. The deal stipulates that Medtronic will handle commercialization while BD will manufacture the product.

The device includes a side-ported catheter, meant to cut down on insulin flow interruptions and silent occlusions, and has the smallest insertion needle on the market, meant to lessen insertion pain, the companies say. The set was developed to work both with Medtronic’s insulin pumps and most pumps currently available.

Franklin Lakes, N.J.-based BD operates in 50 countries. It acquired devicemaker CareFusion earlier this year.

Medtronic, which operates in more than 160 countries, acquired fellow Irish devicemaker Covidien in January. — Jason Scott
