Google Develops Cardiac Sensor Wristband

June 24, 2015

Google’s life sciences division will start testing a cardiac sensor for wear on the wrist, designed to measure basic biological signals such as pulse, activity level and skin temperature. The device can take an electrocardiogram and capture environmental factors including light exposure and noise level, the company said Tuesday.

One of the chief challenges in disease understanding and intervention is that physicians see patients sporadically, generally during once-a-year visits, the devicemaker says. Miniaturized sensors and wearable devices could give doctors access to a continuous update of medically relevant data, potentially suggesting improved ways to earlier diagnose and treat diseases.

Clinical trials are slated to begin in the next few months, a spokeswoman told Device Daily.
The life sciences division’s other projects include: a smart contact lens with a miniaturized glucose sensor and a nanodiagnostics platform for early disease detection. — Jason Scott
