WHO Prequalifies ShangRing Circumcision Device to Prevent HIV Spread

June 26, 2015

The World Health Organization has prequalified the ShangRing device for male circumcision as an alternative to surgery.

The single-use sterile device, manufactured by China-based Wuhu Snnda Medical Treatment Appliance Technology, is indicated for adolescent and adult males 13 and older.

The product is designed to prevent bleeding, inflammation, swelling and pain caused by surgical circumcision, as well as reduce HIV transmission and sexually transmitted disease rates in developing countries, the WHO says.

Clinical trials in Kenya, Uganda and South Africa have demonstrated a 60 percent reduction in heterosexually-acquired HIV infection in men. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation provided funding for the studies. — Jason Scott
