Corvida Device Protects Healthcare Workers from Drug Exposure

July 31, 2015

Corvida Medical announced it has received 510(k) clearance from the FDA to market its Halo closed system transfer device to protect healthcare professionals from exposure to hazardous drugs.

The Coralville, Iowa, company says the device received an ONB product code classification, meaning it demonstrated no escape of hazardous drugs or vapor concentrations. It points out that more than 5.5 million healthcare workers are exposed annually to hazardous drugs during the preparation and delivery of chemotherapy and that exposure has been linked to adverse health issues.

The Halo provides health care professionals with an airtight, leak-proof system when handling hazardous drugs. Components include drug vial adapters, syringe and line adapters and bag spikes, according to the company’s website.

The Halo is expected to be commercially available in late 2015. —John Bechtel
