Sorin Launches Pacemaker that Features Sleep Apnea Algorithm

August 3, 2015

Sorin Group has launched its new cardiac resynchronization therapy pacemaker Reply CRT-P that features a sleep apnea algorithm. The first of the new pacemakers was implanted in a 72-year-old woman in Great Britain.

Using a sensor to monitor ventilation, the algorithm monitors patients for severe sleep apnea so they can be treated and can be used to monitor the long-term progression of the disease.

Studies from heart failure patients suggest that obstructive and central sleep apnea may be present in 30 percent to 50 percent of the patients. If untreated it could increase the risk of heart failure hospitalization and even death.

Sorin employs 3,900 people worldwide focusing on two areas, cardiac surgery (cardiopulmonary  products for open heart surgery and heart valve repair or replacement prostheses) and cardiac rhythm management (pacemakers, defibrillators and non-invasive monitoring to diagnose arrhythmias and deliver anti-arrhythmia therapy). — John Bechtel
