Study Finds Imaging Studies to Diagnose Injuries Safe for Pregnant Mother and Fetus

August 7, 2015

Imaging studies necessary to diagnose traumatic injuries sustained by pregnant women are safe so long as they are used properly, according to a study in the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Approximately five percent to eight percent of women suffer traumatic injuries during pregnancy, such as fractures and muscle tears, and orthopedic surgeons frequently recommend radiographs and other imaging studies for evaluation and management.

The study found that while high doses of ionizing radiation from X-rays may result in birth defects, spontaneous abortions and a higher risk of cancer, fetal exposure depends on several factors. These include the body part being imaged, the distance between the fetus and the area being imaged and the safety protocols followed.

The study also found that X-ray exposure from a single diagnostic procedure does not result in harmful effects to the fetus. — Michael Cipriano
