Washington Hospital Implants Cochlear’s Thinnest Implant

Overlake Medical Center in Bellevue, Washington, is the first hospital in the state to use the Cochlear Nucleus Profile with Slim Straight platform on a patient suffering from severe hearing loss.

The new platform is the thinnest cochlear implant available today and recently received FDA approval, according to the devicemaker.

The thin design means the device is less noticeable, which allows patients to lead active lives without drawing attention to the implant.

Cochlear implants are a medical option for children as young as 12 months old with profound hearing loss in both ears, children two and older with severe to profound hearing loss and adults with moderate to profound hearing loss, according to the company. — John Bechtel
