Anatomics Announces First Surgery With 3D Printed Ribs

September 16, 2015

Australia-based Anatomics has announced the first surgery with its 3D printed titanium sternum and rib implant, performed on a cancer patient in Spain.

The Salamanca University Hospital surgical team removed the sternum and a portion of the rib cage of the man, who was diagnosed with a chest wall sarcoma, and replace them with an implant.

Anatomics created the 3D reconstruction of the chest wall using high resolution CT data, which allowed the surgeons to plan and accurately define resection margins. Dr. José Aranda, a member of the surgical team, said the implant “fit like a glove.”
