Medtronic Announces Availability of MiniMed Connect

Irish devicemaker Medtronic announced the commercial launch of its MiniMed Connect device, allowing people with diabetes to view their insulin pump and continuous glucose monitoring information on a smartphone.

The keychain device sends data from the pump via Bluetooth to a smartphone app.

It also allows monitoring of diabetes information through the company’s CareLink therapy management software. The software delivers text notifications to healthcare providers when the patient’s sugar levels rise too high or dip too low.

While the smartphone app will initially be available with Apple’s iOS phone, Medtronic is working with Samsung to develop an app for Android. — Michael Cipriano
