Royal Philips Partners With MIT to Research Less-Invasive ICP Measurement

Healthcare technology company Royal Philips has partnered with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to evaluate the use of Philips ultrasound technology and MIT physiological modeling to measure intracranial pressure — an essential tool in managing patients with brain injuries.

Over the next two years, Philips will work with MIT to develop the minimally invasive approach. Philips will collaborate with neurosurgery experts to test a core estimation algorithm developed by the Integrative Neuro-monitoring and Critical Care Informatics Group in MIT’s Institute for Medical Engineering and Science.

Current methods for measuring intracranial pressure require surgical penetration of the skull or lumbar spine and insertion of a catheter into the cerebrospinal fluid space or neural tissue. — Michael Cipriano
